INTERSCENSUS

Interscensus is an experimental web experience inspired by Radiohead’s “No Surprises.” It reimagines the song’s tension between beauty and despair through a digital descent into psychological torment, blending art, code, and emotion.

Drawing from Dante’s Inferno, the website guides users through five interactive levels of internal suffering a modern exploration of control, conformity, and existential decay.

THE PROBLEM

Scroll on section

Modern life often masks emotional suffering beneath calm appearances. Themes of depression, societal pressure, and mental collapse are difficult to express interactively while maintaining a balance between beauty and despair.

THE BRIEF

Scroll on section

Create an interactive web experience that interprets the tone and message of “No Surprises” using design and code. The outcome must combine experimental storytelling, emotional immersion, and interactive functionality.

THE SOLUTION

Scroll on section

Through web design and development, Interscensus transforms music into a visual metaphor. Users navigate five psychological levels, each representing a state of emotional decay, using surreal digital collage, subtle animation, and symbolic interaction. The website blends Romanticism with digital art, using motion to express suffocation, control, and the longing for escape.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

Scroll on section

Individuals interested in experimental digital storytelling, interactive art, and emotional design. This project appeals to audiences drawn to conceptual multimedia work that combines fine art, psychology, and technology.

AIMS

To explore how interactive media can express internal emotional states through visual storytelling and experimental coding.

OBJECTIVES

The objective was to translate the emotional and lyrical essence of “No Surprises” into a digital psychological experience by developing five cohesive levels that represent stages of mental and emotional descent, using motion and interactivity to immerse users into the atmosphere, while integrating web design and development to create a seamless and interactive narrative flow.

NO SURPRISES

MY INTERPRETATION

"No Surprises by Radiohead captures the feeling of being completely drained emotionally, mentally, and physically. It reflects how everyday routines and societal expectations slowly eat away at who we are, leaving us stuck in a cycle of unhappiness and exhaustion. The song speaks about wanting peace and calm, even if that means an end to everything. What really stands out to me is the contrast between the soothing, lullaby-like melody and the dark, hopeless lyrics. It feels like a mask calm on the surface, but breaking underneath. To me, that represents how people are forced to hide their pain just to fit in, until they lose sight of who they really are."

RESEARCH

DANTE'S INFERNO

Dante’s Inferno, the first part of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (early 14th century), follows Dante’s journey through Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. The poem blends Christian theology, classical mythology, and personal reflection, using vivid allegory to explore sin, justice, and redemption.

Themes and Symbolisms of Dante's Inferno include Divine Justice, Moral Allegory, and Reason vs. Faith.

ROMANTICISM ART

Romanticism was an artistic and intellectual movement that emerged in late 18th-century Europe as a reaction against Enlightenment rationalism.

Romanticism’s aesthetic is dramatic and emotional, marked by bold contrasts, rich colours, and expressive brushwork. Its scenes often depict nature’s power and human emotion, creating a moody, dreamlike atmosphere that feels raw and alive.

Dante's Inferno

TREATMENT

The style takes inspiration from Dante’s Inferno and Romanticism art, mixing classical imagery with a modern digital twist. I used collage and Photoshop to layer old textures and dramatic visuals with clean type and subtle animations. The result feels dark, expressive, and emotional almost painterly showing the contrast between old and new, chaos and calm.

The tone is introspective and haunting, reflecting the tension between beauty and pain. Each level explores a different kind of internal suffering a personal, earthly version of hell. It’s quiet but heavy, emotional but calm, mirroring the feeling of being trapped inside your own mind while trying to find peace.

Compass Navigation

NAVIGATION

Navigate through each level of hell using the interactive compass. As you descend deeper, the compass guides you through Dante's nine circles, each representing a different form of suffering and sin.

HOME PAGE

The home page consists of a map of the mental underworld. The map will be based on an island the shape of a brain to express the fact that this Hell is within one's head and giving insight into what is to be expected on the following pages.

LEVEL 1

The first level is based on social expectations. A mythological creature rules over this level, he embodies the power that social expectations has on our minds. He represents societal pressures, consumerism, manipulation and control. Surrounding him is collapsed figures, some of which he is crushing under this throne as they all have chains attached to them. This represents the dominion and exhaustion social expectations create.

LEVEL 2

The second level is based on the concept of a mask or a facade that we put on in order to fit in and conform to the world around us. However in turn your true self becomes distorted, fragmented or decaying under this mask, it becomes a shield which makes it near impossible to unveil your true self and caused further internal scars.

LEVEL 3

The third level is based on loss of personal identity and purpose. This happens through oppression and surrender. This will be represented through mix-matching body parts and their functions, creating a disjointed identity unable to function normally.

LEVEL 4

The fourth level is based on feeling trapped and suffocated. This will be represented through continuous drowning in a lake with only their hands visible as they struggle and grasp for help. This will be accompanied by hands coming from the edges of the screen that follow the mouse.

LEVEL 5

The fifth level is based on depression, death and suicide. This is represented through the concept of time, focusing on trapped in time and space through death. Imagery of a broken clock hand that has an impaled individual on it, and having the soul sucked out of them. The rest of the page will just have souls floating in an abyss, frozen in time and space.

"Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision." - Salvador Dalí
